"the national garden festival programme was introduced in the 1980s by michael heseltine to regenerate communities devastated by closure of traditional industries such as coal mining and steel works. the ebbw vale garden festival was the last and in terms of the number of visitors it attracted was the most successful with over two million people passing through the gates. most of the other festivals in places like glasgow and newcastle returned to dormant sites once the festival gates closed. because the festival in ebbw vale was in such close proximity to the town a follow up plan of use for the site was always part of the regeneration project and even if the site had only been transformed from the then derelict steel works hot mill site into a green field area it would have been worthwhile. the legacy of the festival is the shopping centre that now occupies the site which is welcome but i think it is a great pity that very little evidence left of what was a wonderful event. i regret that the success of the last national garden festival was not used as a spring board to setting up a tourist industry in the borough which could have continued to attract people to our beautiful valleys and shown the world the rich industrial history our area can boast." - dai davies, member of parliament for blaenau gwent the was hosted in the small town of ebbw vale, well known for it's steel and iron industry throughout the idustrial revolution. many questions have been asked about the garden festival of the past, present and future. the festival which run from may 1st 1992 to october 4th 1992, attracted more than 2 million visitors to the welsh valley and made ebbw vale the buzzing town of the time. huge publicity was gained from various local newspapers, regional television programs and even soap operas (it had a mention on emmerdale!). the 70 acre site hosted a wide range of events with a mixture of attractions to suit everyone, with attractions including a gentle ride up the mountain, folk dancing, falconry displays, various sculptures and even houses of the future. people travelled far and wide to see what the offered. although many loved by all, the event was made to end, and so it did. regeneration could begin, to bring ebbw vale back to acceptable standards. so, 26 years on, has the garden festival made any difference? some say yes, others will argue no. but what is of the ? the "festival park" site is still well known by the brown gryff logo sign posts. parts of the old sculptures are still in place such as the optical eye and the willowman and snake (although requires maintainance). the festival shopping centre is open and doing well, with possible planned expansion. the site is also occupied by houses, a gym, a fishing club and an owl sanctuary. where next? what does the future hold? the festival shops are now the main attraction, although it has been known for small groups of people to visit their past to see what the festival is now. the history of the site is becoming faded, and this is the aim of this web site. this site aims to keep the spirit of the alive and let everyone know the success it had in ebbw vale . -- terms & conditions - credits - resources © mathew parker 2008 you don't appear to have javascript enabled. please click here to make the site easier to use.
